While slides prepared from sections of bone, teeth, and soft limestone were popular from the earliest days of commercial slide production, it was some years later before the ability to thin section hard minerals was developed. Many of the mineral thin section slides made for the retail market featured material from well known landmarks or geological formations around the world, to increase their interest. Most are best viewed with polarized light.
